Two for one specials on Arlanda Express get you from the airport to Stockholm city center quickly, cheaply and easily. But is Arlanda Express the best way to go?

The fast train whisks you between the airport and city center in 20 minutes, with trains departing the airport and city center every 15 minutes during peak periods.
Traveling from the airport, Arlanda Express terminates at Central Station in the city center.
Arlanda Express is not the cheapest way to reach Central Station. The Flygbussarna (airport bus) costs only SEK 110 per person (about US$15), but takes twice as long to get there.
Terminating at Central Station is great if you’re staying at one of these hotels: Radisson SAS Royal Viking, Nordic Light or Nordic Sea, and Clarion Hotel Sign, and although it’s not shown in the photo, the Sheraton Stockholm (about a five-minute walk from the Arlanda Express terminus).
If you’re not up for walking, you could take a taxi or navigate your way to the metro (called Tunnelbana or T-Bana). One smart purchase is the Stockholm Card. Once in Stockholm, use the card for admission to 75 museums and attractions, free public transportation, sightseeing by boat on the Historical Canal Tour and much, much more. Cost: SEK 375 for a 24-hour card. Also available for 48 hours and 72 hours. See The Stockholm Card: Is It Worth It? The Card Is Costly at SEK395 But It Can Save You Time & Money.
But suppose you’re not traveling with your significant other and four kids? Can you still take advantage of the two-for-one special on Arlanda Express? Yes. But to do so, you’ll need to buddy-up with another single traveler. That’s easy, but first, unless you’ve already found a solo traveler to join you, DO NOT buy your ticket before reaching the tracks. Once there, at the airport, look for the “Meeting Point” beside the Arlanda Express ticket kiosks. You’ll likely find someone there or nearby who is also looking for a traveling companion. Don’t be afraid to ask.
At Central Station, it’s even easier. There is a designated area for solo travelers to connect. Take a seat on the bench as seen in the photo below, meet someone and buy your ticket. It’s up to you to figure out how to divvy up the costs, but you’ll save some money and meet someone to boot.
If you’re not staying in one of the easy-to-reach hotels or if you’re headed to your ship, docked at Frihamnen or Stadsgården or elsewhere (see Stockholm Cruise: Where The Cruise Ships Are Docked), you are probably better off taking a taxi from the Airport to your ship. The fixed fee from the airport to anywhere in the city center (including the cruise terminals) with Taxi Stockholm is SEK495 (about $70). Taxi Stockholm’s phone: +46-8-15 00 00
Taxis are convenient and comfortable, and if there are two or more traveling together, a taxi can be the best value for you. If you opt for a taxi, I recommend Taxi Stockholm. Although fees from the airport to the city center are fixed for all taxi companies in Stockholm, fares within the city center can vary quite a bit. Taxi Stockholm has been the most trustworthy for me. See Doug Lansky’s article The great Swedish taxi rip-off in the English-language newspaper, The Local.
By the way, if you travel by Arlanda Express to Central Station and want to get from there to your ship, your best bet is a taxi. From Central Station to Frihamnen should run you about SEK150-175 and to Stadsgården about SEK120 using Taxi Stockholm. Also see A Reader Asks, Can I Walk To Frihamnen? Well, Yes, But . . .
If you’re staying at a hotel that offers them, bicycles are another great way to get around once in Stockholm. Hilton Slussen and Scandic Anglais make bikes available free of charge.

Stockholm a fairly compact city, so it’s easy to get around and explore. You can walk or bike to most places of interest in Stockholm.
